Citizenship
Citizenship Intent
The intent of the GCSE Citizenship curriculum is to:
- show you (students) about Life in Modern Britain and look at the make-up and dynamics of contemporary society, what it means to be British as well as the role of the media and the UK’s role on the world stage.3
- give you the power through your experience of media, including social media to recognise whether what you’re hearing, seeing, and experiencing is fact or opinion, developing your character and confidence as an independent thinker and decision maker
- look at the rights and responsibilities through the nature of laws, rights, responsibilities, and the increasing globalisation of laws due to treaties and agreements to which the UK abides
- through politics and participation aim to give you (students), through their understanding of the political process, the knowledge, and skills necessary to appreciate how to resolve issues and bring about change, and give hope how the empowered citizen is at the heart of our society
- prepare you to navigate your duties as a citizen of Britain, developing your emotional, social, and political awareness, so that you can be included in the decisions we make as a citizen.5
- raise your confidence in speaking and writing, and to develop your ability to form and participate in clear, coherent debates developing perseverance, character and hope
- remind you that you have a personal identity.2
- provide a model for how to investigate the unknown, including where to go for information if you have none, comparing facts and opinions and building within you an attitude of perseverance to find out answers.
- broaden your personal hopes and aspirations for the future, by actively making your voice heard and making a difference in society on a chosen theme.
